Introduction

The Seekers – Georgy Girl (1967, Los Angeles, Vinyl) - Discogs

“Georgy Girl” is a song by the Australian pop/folk music group The Seekers, serving as the title track for the 1966 film of the same name. The music was composed by Tom Springfield, known for “I’ll Never Find Another You,” while Jim Dale provided the lyrics. Featured prominently at both the beginning and end of the film, the song boasts notably different lyrics in these instances, distinct again from the commercially released version. Although nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song, it ultimately lost to “Born Free.”

The song achieved significant success in late 1966 and early 1967, securing the top spot in Australia and reaching number three in the United Kingdom. In the United States, it became the Seekers’ highest-charting single, claiming the number one position on the Cash Box Top 100. While “Georgy Girl” climbed to number two on the Billboard Hot 100, it was edged out of the top spot by “I’m a Believer” by The Monkees. The song’s triumph in the U.S. led to the renaming of the Seekers’ British album “Come the Day” to “Georgy Girl” for its American release.

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, a reworked version of the “Georgy Girl” song and melody found its way into Barbie doll commercials, including those for Beauty Secrets Barbie and Angel Face Barbie. New lyrics were introduced, replacing the original line “Hey there, Georgy Girl” with the rendition “Here comes Barbie fun.” In some instances, the commercials featured only the melody of “Georgy Girl” playing in the background, with no accompanying lyrics. This adaptation added a playful and iconic touch to Barbie advertising during that era.

Lyrics

Hey there, Georgy girl
Swingin’ down the street so fancy-free
Nobody you meet could ever see
The loneliness there
Inside you

Hey there, Georgy girl
Why do all the boys just pass you by?
Could it be you just don’t try
Or is it the clothes you wear?

You’re always window-shopping
But never stopping to buy
So, shed those dowdy feathers and fly
A little bit

Hey there, Georgy girl
There’s another Georgy deep inside
Bring out all the love you hide
And, oh, what a change there’d be
The world would see
A new Georgy girl

Hey there, Georgy girl
Dreamin’ of the someone you could be
Life is a reality
You can’t always run away

Don’t be so scared of changing
And rearranging yourself
It’s time for jumping down from the shelf
A little bit

Hey there, Georgy girl
There’s another Georgy deep inside
Bring out all the love you hide
And, oh, what a change there’d be
The world would see
A new Georgy girl

(Hey there, Georgy girl)
Wake up, Georgy girl
(Hey there, Georgy girl)
Come on, Georgy girl
(Hey there, Georgy girl)
Wake up, Georgy girl
(Hey there, Georgy girl)
Come on, Georgy girl
